You know that feeling when your overwhelmed, and then somehow you find yourself getting more and more worked up, and close to losing your cool? It’s that feeling of overstimulation, frustration, and eventually losing touch with your ability to stay calm, grounded, and like the parent you really want to be.

We get it. And we’ve been there.

Here’s the thing: there’s a lot about parenting that can be incredibly overwhelming and overstimulating.

With young babies, it’s that feeling of being touched out, rattled by the crying, and the frustration that builds when you don’t get a minute “off.”

With toddlers and young kids, it’s the noise, the big emotions, and balancing everyone’s changing needs.

And with older kids, you’re managing big expressions of new feelings, challenging behaviours, school stresses, family dynamics, and outside influences. And through it all, you’ve also got your own needs to try to meet, the demands of balancing so much, with relationships, work, and everything in between.

Phew. No wonder so many parents are feeling on edge.

When you live with constant demands, stress, and stimulation, your nervous system can becoming dysregulated – meaning, you end up in a fight/flight state far too easily, and for far too long.

Not only is it exhausting to always feel on edge, it also takes away from the joy you feel day to day, it disconnects you from the parent you want to be, and it can completely tank your mood (not to mention the negative health implications of constant stress).

The answer?

Well, on one hand we need to look at how we can reduce the stressors in your life, but as a parent, it’s often the case where you can’t change some of the most stressful things (like big emotions, little sleep, and a million competing needs).

So the other option is to learn how to calm down your nervous system (called self-regulation) so that you can have some moments of reprieve and not always live in a stress-state.

This is exactly what we are teaching in this workshop.

What You’ll Learn in the Workshop:

In this workshop, you’ll learn exactly what’s happening in your nervous system so that you have a better understanding of yourself, your triggers and how your body reacts. We want you to leave with tangible strategies that work for YOU, and with confidence that you know exactly how and when to use these tools. Rather than just talking about symptoms or concepts, you’ll leave with truly useful skills that you can start using right away.

We’ll cover:

  • How your nervous system functions and why you’re feeling dysregulated
  • The costs of not learning how to regulate your system (i.e., why this matters)
  • Your unique triggers, and what information your body tells you
  • The most effective (and realistic) tools to help you regulate your nervous system

Why This Really Matters:

There’s lots of chatter online about “nervous system regulation” but why does this really matter? What’s the point of being regulated?

Well, when you are regulated (when you’re feeling calm and present), you feel safe in your body. And when you feel safe, you have the ability to make a lot of choices that you otherwise can’t make when you’re overwhelmed. In fact, you have access to a whole part of you brain that essentially goes “offline” when you’re dysregulated.

Rather than playing out knee-jerk reactions, you get so much more choice.

  • you can choose how to react to your children in tricky moments (rather than snapping or yelling)
  • you are able to make choices that align with your values (rather than operating on auto-pilot)
  • you are more likely to feel connected to others (rather than pulling away and isolating)
  • you’re more likely to choose true self-care (rather than zoning out with things like social media)

About The perinatal collective

Welcome! So glad you're here.

We're a team of mental health therapists across Canada with advanced education and experience in perinatal mental health, meaning you don't have to cross your fingers and hope that we understand how hard this stage can be.

We understand the nuances of the early stages of parenthood: how typical counselling strategies may not be relevant to parents with young kids, and how mental health challenges look different during this time.

From deciding to have children, to navigating your journey through fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, relationship changes, parenting, career demands and beyond, parenthood can be full with challenges.

Our goal is to help you manage the peaks and valleys of the entire journey, while staying connected to yourself, and feeling whole, along the way.
